Critique of Lesson Plan

The lesson plan for teaching students about found poetry is a great way to get students involved in their reading. Instead of reading a story and moving on, the students delve into it and the students create their own work based off the story, One thing that I thought that was out of place about the lesson was inviting family and friends for a class performance. I think the teacher could achieve the same goals by having the students perform in front of a parallel class or some administrators. If each student had only one line to memorize and practice and his family would come to watch, they would not appreciate having been invited . I think a performance that people are invited to should be saved for a bigger accomplishment and a more comprehensive effort on the part of the students.

  1. Hi Chana.
I agree with you. The greates joy a parent has is watching their child achieve and accomplish. However teachers must keep in mind that parents have busy scheduals. Maybe she can send home a copy of the found poem to the parents, so that they can be involved in their childrens schoolife without it taking up so much time.

    1. Rochel, you made a good suggestion.

I think that a performance is a good way of showing the students the importance of the subject ELA and their accomplishments. I am sure parents appreciate the fact that the teacher is being creative and their child is excited about his/her poem. But you are right that some parents have busy schedules, and would not appreciate coming down to school for the size of this milestone. They would prefer to save coming down to school for bigger and better things. I think your suggestion with sending home a copy is a very good solution to the problem posed.

  2. I agree with you and you just brought out another real good strategy "Readers Theater." "Reader's Theater is a strategy for developing reading fluency. It involves children in oral reading through reading parts in scripts," except students do not need to memorize their part. THey just need to reread a few times to develop their fluency skills. For more information and how to do a Reader's Theater, go to this link: http://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/readers_theater/.
